Fishing

Have you ever had the thought “Prayer is like fishing”? Well it hadn’t crossed my mind until one night when I was sleeping, in a dream God told me prayer is like fishing.  The next day all I kept asking myself was “What in the world does that mean?”

In my prayer time, I really focused on how prayer is like fishing and the very first thing God showed me was faith.  When you are fishing and throwing your line out into the lake, you do it in faith believing that you’re going to catch a fish.  Like it says in Mark 11:24 ”Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours.” If you pray to God asking for a blessing, you are believing to receive it. In spiritual fishing your bait resembles your prayer to God and your prayer is to receive your fish.  In Matthew 17:20 Jesus talks about how a little faith can do big works. He said to his disciples “I tell you the truth, If you have faith as small as a mustard seed you can say to this mountain, ‘move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”  Now if you haven’t seen a mustard seed, they are only a little bigger than a grain of sand.  So Jesus was saying you only need a small amount of faith to move a mountain.   You can get anything you ask for whether it’s healing or a blessing.

Now another similarity God showed me is time.  When you go fishing it takes patience and time to catch your fish.  Not every time you’re going to catch it as soon as your bait is in the water. In Hebrews 6:12 it says “We do not want to become lazy, but imitate those who walk through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.”  You need to be patient and wait for your fish to take your bait.   When you go fishing you believe you’re going to catch something, right?

Let me tell you a story.  My siblings and I wanted to get a dog.  We’d go to Petco and go down the dog isle and my dad would say “get me out!”  We’d drive by going grocery shopping and it would be dog adoption day and we would say “Please dad can we go in and my dad would say, No we’re finishing our shopping!” We prayed and our friends prayed for 10 years straight not losing our faith in God and on Christmas day of 2012 we received our puppy. Now our dad makes breakfast for him and rubs his belly every morning. Even though it took a long time for our prayer to get answered we learned God always has perfect timing.  The other resemblance I’ve noticed is the lake itself.  We cast our lines into the lake of blessing expecting to reap a harvest. The devil on the other hand may try to confuse you by making the lakes water murky with algae and scum.  But it says in Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is being sure of what you hope for and being certain of what you do not see.” If we use our faith we don’t even need to see our blessings to know that they are there.  Don’t stop having faith in God because nothing is impossible for him,  if you believe!
