I leaned into hear my beautiful mother’s voice. Her words revealed the Korean descent as she spoke with a sharp, Asian accent , “Now, my daughter, the role of husband is very important. You know why? Because husband is ‘band around ‘ house’.”
I must say that this simple, broken English quote, spoken with penetrating truth, flowing forth from my wise mother’s mouth caused me to pause all other thoughts attempting to come through me, and in that moment I realized even more, the heart wrenching responsibility God has placed within and upon a man. Of course, there is a right that is received in being a husband, but with that right, comes great responsibility.
As we ponder the awe striking responsibility of the husband who must be the ‘band around ‘ house’, how much more should we as wives, generally speaking, step it up a notch with our assistance, instead of our nagging with “I told you so” reverberations that only break the spirit of a human being, let alone a man. It is highly essential that we finally allow our personality to get behind us and allow the Holy Spirit to be revealed through us.
Perhaps when we purposely take a moment to consider what the husband does and is called to do:
- He goes out to conquer.
- To conquer, he then brings back the provision for the family he takes care of.
- To provide he must yearn to return, as he prayerfully hears the whisper of his grateful wife and family; but, many times he does not hear gratefulness, but words that tear down and cremate the soul.
- Whether he hears the whisper of his grateful wife and family or not, either way he must stay focused on God as the responsibility on his own is far too great.
- As he stays focused on God, he realizes the ones he provides and conquers for, are focused on him to do what is not only right, but with character and integrity.
- As he returns home, joins his family in their daily bread, living life together, ensuring his family knows the God he relies on so that when he lays his head down at night, he is able to arise yet again, conquering and providing as he stays focused on God. He is truly the band around the house as he looks to his Heavenly Belt of Truth, Jesus.
Therefore, as he looks to Jesus, there is a reflection that wives and families must begin to see, the reflection of the One True Husband Who is revealed in Isaiah 54. The Lord says to the ‘wife’ or ‘bride’, “Fear not, you will no longer live in shame. The shame of your youth and the sorrow of widowhood will be remembered no more, for your Creator will be your husband. The Lord Almighty is His name! He is your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, the God of all the earth. For the Lord has called you back from your grief – as though you were a young wife abandoned by her husband.”
Finally, as we are aware that there is a cunning, subtle voice attempting to tear the family unit apart, let us be a part of the transformation as we intentionally, on purpose hear and heed the Voice of our Creator, our True Husband…God.
Let us get ready, and get set to go to victory as we see the husband become the band around his home.
Will I as his wife, help him succeed? O how this is not an option, but a mandate, as I must pray, cheer and lock arm in arm with the one who I am privileged to be one with; allowing my husband to echo the ‘Band Who tightly keeps us together’. For there is no one like Him…no not one!
